Whole Wheat Pizza Dough


100% whole wheat pizza dough


If you want to make your pizza a little healthier this whole wheat pizza dough is for you. I used white whole wheat flour and let the dough rise twice before using in the recipe to ensure that resulting crust wasn’t too heavy or dense.

Homemade pizza is one of my favorite dishes to make. I love trying new combinations of toppings, sauces, and cheese. I’ve got a few recipes up my sleeve to share with you over the coming months.

Whole Wheat Pizza Dough

  • 1 1/4 cup warm water
  • 2 Tablespoons sugar or honey
  • 1 heaping Tablespoon yeast
  • 1/4 cup oil
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 cups white whole wheat flour


  1. In a medium bowl stir together the water, sugar, and yeast.
  2. Let sit for 10 to 15 minutes or until foamy and increased in volume. Add oil.
  3. In a large bowl combine 2 1/2 cups of flour and the salt.
  4. Pour the contents of the liquid bowl into the flour and salt and stir to combine.
  5. Flour a clean surface and knead the dough for 7 to 10 minutes or until smooth.
  6. Add additional flour as needed until the dough is soft and slightly sticky.
  7. Form dough into a ball
  8. Grease a large bowl. Place dough in the bowl and flip ball over to ensure all sides are greased.
  9. Cover with plastic wrap or a damp tea towel. Let rise in a warm, draft free spot for an hour or until doubled in size. Punch down and let rise for 30 to 45 minutes longer.
  10. Use in your favorite pizza recipe.
