Slow Cooker Swiss Steak

Swiss steak is one of my favorite meals. I generally make it during the colder weather and we’ve had some February like weather the past few days so it was perfect.

This doesn’t take much hands on time but ends up fork tender and flavorful. Serve it with mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles to soak up the tomato gravy. I like broccoli or roasted cabbage as a side dish.

  • 1 pound boneless round steak cut into serving sized pieces
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 6 ounce can tomato paste
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 1 onion , sliced
  • 2 Tablespoons oil


  1. In a skillet heat oil over medium heat until hot.
  2. While the pan heats, mix the flour, salt, pepper, and paprika together in a shallow dish. Coat the steak in seasoned flour.
  3. Add to the hot skillet and cook for 3-4 minutes on either side until browned, working in batches if necessary.
  4. Place browned meat in a 2 or 4 quart slow cooker. Add tomato paste and onion. Pour water into skillet you browned the meat in, stirring to get up any browned bits.
  5. Cook for a minute or two and add that into the slow cooker. Stir everything gently to combine.
  6. Cover and cook on low for 6-8 hours until the meat is tender. Serve with mashed potatoes, rice or egg noodles.
