Biscuits and gravy are my favorite comfort food. I think if I had to eat just one food for breakfast for the rest of my life this would be it.

Southern Sausage Gravy

  • 1 pound bulk breakfast sausage
  • 2 Tablespoons all purpose flour
  • 2 to 2 1/2 cups milk
  • To taste salt
  • To taste pepper


  1. Slice sausage into patties of desired thickness. Fry in a skillet until internal temperature reaches 160 degrees. Remove from skillet and keep warm.
  2. Measure out 2 Tablespoons of fat from sausage and discard the rest. If using a lean sausage add oil or butter to reach 2 Tablespoons of fat. Sprinkle with the flour and cook and stir for 2 to 3 minutes.
  3. Whisk in the milk and bring to a simmer. Cook for 5 minutes or until gravy has thickened.
  4. Crumble 4 sausage patties into the gravy and season to taste with salt and pepper.
  5. Serve over hot buttermilk biscuits and enjoy!

  1. Love your blog. My son loves sausage gravy and biscuits. My recipe is similar to yours. I crumble the sausage as cooking, add oil and/or butter if dry. Then add the flour as you do (but a little more). But then I add water to fill out about 2/3 of the recipe( approx 2-3 cups), and then a can of can milk.. Salt and lots of pepper.
