Cabbage is one of our favorite vegetables. It is super versatile and goes with so many different main dishes. Another reason we love cabbage is it’s available all year and I can find it on sale at one of the local grocery stores pretty much every week. That is a winner in my book.

My favorite way to have cabbage is fried cabbage. It’s cheap, easy, and oh so delicious. It’s also the perfect accompaniment to some of my all time favorite meals. Fried chicken, meatloaf, Salisbury steak, or chicken and dressing all taste amazing with fried cabbage

This easy recipe only takes a handful of ingredients and about 30 minutes  If you can chop, you can make this delicious Southern classic. Seriously, it’s not hard at all folks.

  • 1 Tablespoon oil
  • 8 cups chopped cabbage
  • 1 cup water
  • salt to taste
  • pepper to taste


  1. Heat oil in a large skillet with a lid over moderate heat 

  2. Add cabbage, stir to coat with oil, and cook for 5 minutes or until lightly browned 

  3. Pour water over cabbage, cover, and cook on medium low heat until the cabbage is tender and water has cooked off 

  4. Season with salt and pepper and serve
