I don’t know about your family but mine loves mashed potatoes. We eat mashed potatoes a couple of times a week because they go so well with so many different main dishes. Plus any leftovers make fabulous easy mashed potato cakes.

These Instant Pot Mashed Potatoes are the classic buttery potatoes that take just a few ingredients and a short amount of time. Since I got my Instant Pot two years ago I have refused to make mashed potatoes any other way. They’re so easy and so much faster than cooking in salted boiling water.

How To Make Instant Pot Mashed Potatoes:

Peel and cut russet potatoes

Place a steamer basket in the pot of an Instant Pot or another electric pressure cooker

Add potatoes and water

Sprinkle with salt

Cover and cook on high pressure

When done release pressure

Remove potatoes from pot and place in a bowl

Add the milk, butter, and sour cream

Mash and season as needed

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds potatoes peeled and cubed
  • 1 cup water
  • Salt to taste
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1/4 cup sour cream
  • 3/4 cup milk

Instructions

  1. Place a steamer basket in the bowl of the pressure cooker
  2. Add potatoes and water
  3. Sprinkle the potatoes with salt
  4. Add the lid, set to seal and cook on high pressure for 4 minutes. On my pressure cooker it uses the pressure cook button, other cookers may say manual like my old one did
  5. Once the time is done do a quick pressure release
  6. Carefully remove the potatoes from the pot and place in a bowl
  7. Add the butter, sour cream, and milk
  8. Mash and adjust seasoning if necessary
