Slow cooker sausage dogs are a delicious change from the usual smoked sausage or hot dogs.
When I posted the weekly menu on Saturday I noticed I had people looking for this recipe right away. I had planned to wait a few weeks before sharing but I decided not to wait.
If you need an all day slow cooker recipe this is not the recipe for you. It cooks in 2 to 4 hours depending on whether you use high or low temp on your slow cooker. I find the cooking time is perfect for lunch after church or while I am home but too busy to cook.
The inspiration for these slow cooker sausage dogs came from slow cooker beer sausage dawgs from Aunt Bee’s Kitchen. Brandi’s recipe has beer, obviously, and sauerkraut. None of us care for the flavor of beer and sauerkraut is on my least favorite foods ever list. I know, I know but a lot of times I see a recipe somewhere and it becomes a jumping off point.
I got to thinking about what I could do so everyone would like it. Leaving the sauerkraut off was easy but I wasn’t sure what to use instead of the beer. Water wouldn’t add the flavor needed and I wasn’t sure about broth. Then I realize soda would work. Just make sure to use a cola type soda with sugar. I used Dr Pepper but your favorite would work. The other adjustment I made was to decrease the amount of brown sugar. I knew I wanted the flavor of the brown sugar but not an overpowering sweetness.
