It’s day 10 of 12 Days of Sweet Eats and Holiday Treats and I’m bringing you one of my new favorite treats. Ever since I made muddy buddies/puppy chow a few months back I have thinking up new variations and this peppermint patty version is perfect for Christmas.
This version features chopped peppermint patties melted with chocolate chips and butter. Due to the filling in the patties there is a slightly different texture than the usual muddy buddies but you can always change up the ratio of peppermint patties to chocolate chips. The first time I made this I used straight up patties with a bit of shortening and the texture difference was a lot more pronounced.
Peppermint Patty Muddy Buddies
- 3 1/2 cups Chex cereal. I used rice but corn works as well
- 1 cup chopped peppermint patties
- 1/2 cup chocolate chips. I used milk because that's what I had on hand but dark chocolate would work since that's normally what the patties are coated in.
- 3 Tablespoons butter
- 1 cup powdered sugar
Place the cereal in a bowl.
In the top of a double boiler or heat proof bowl combine the peppermint patties, chocolate chips, and butter. Place over simmering water for about 10 minutes, stirring frequently, until the chocolate has melted.
Drizzle the chocolate over the cereal and stir gently to combine.
Place the powdered sugar in a gallon sized resealable bag and add chocolate coated cereal. Close and gently shake to coat.
Spread on waxed paper to cool.
Store in air tight container.
